How to Apply

PROGRAM BREAKDOWN:

Throughout the course of the four-year, 6,000 hour apprenticeship program, apprentices will gain many skills. Our basic program format uses a blended approach that includes safety orientation, on-the-job training, related studies lessons, classroom lessons and hands-on instruction all in a controlled setting.

WHAT DOES A BOILERMAKER APPRENTICE DO ON THE JOB?

• Loading and unloading materials
• Rigging materials for movement
• Directing crane operations
• Assembling and disassembling scaffolds and platforms
• Changing crane booms
• Inspecting and caring for rigging accessories and equipment
• Burning, gouging and welding
• Removing and replacing tubes
• Interpreting blueprints
• Laying out components
• Erecting support steel beams and columns
• Using various welding machines
• Aligning and fitting components

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU APPLY:

• Are you willing and able to do demanding and strenuous physical work?
• Are you afraid of working at heights?
• Are you claustrophobic?
• Are you willing to travel and live away from home for long periods of time to maintain employment?
• Are you willing to work in all types of adverse conditions?
• Are you willing to commit to 6,000 hours of on-the-job training?
• Are you willing and able to complete the LMS lessons and the on-the-job training modules?
• Do you understand that, based on the employment conditions, you may be unemployed from time to time?
• Are you dedicated to performing all assigned jobs to the best of your ability and in compliance with employer standards?
• Are you willing and able to attend mandatory classroom instruction?
• Do you agree to be bound by the terms and conditions of  all area and national apprenticeship rules and regulations?

If you answered NO to any of these questions, you may want to reconsider applying for the Boilermaker Apprenticeship Program.

READY TO APPLY?

Before you apply, please review the following minimum requirements and gather all required documentation. Please note that applications will not be accepted without all required documentation uploaded:

• All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
• Birth certificate
• High school diploma/GED/Equivalency Certificate
• Optional to upload if applicable:
  • Certified Welding Tests
  • Welding Class Certificate from Vocational/Technical Schools
  • DD214 (ONLY for Military Veterans)

SELECTION PROCESS:

Each local takes a new class of apprentices approximately every 6 months depending on the area’s workload and size. Applications are selected first on the basis of welding qualifications, and then on the basis of random selection. If your application is chosen, you will be mailed a letter of acceptance with further information a month before the meeting.

Applications will remain active for a period of 2 years. If an applicant has not been indentured within the two-year period, they must re-apply.

HELMETS TO HARDHATS:

If you are a veteran, with an honorable discharge, and you have completed the Helmets to Hardhats registration process, your name will be added to the top of the local’s applicant registry. When that local requests apprentices, you will gain direct entry into the apprenticeship program.
